Pearl (Silk) Knotting
Level: Beginner
Nothing looks and feels as luxurious as knotted silk jewellery! Knots are a great alternative to spacer beads for stones and pearls that do not require added decoration. This technique prevents precious beads from getting lost if the strand breaks, and delicate beads from chipping against one another.
I have developed a surprisingly easy method: the knots are always very close and tight, and the clasp is attached seamlessly. If you prefer to tackle the traditional knotting technique – which is ideal for extremely long necklaces – I can guide you through it as well. Knotting can be very relaxing and sparks some great conversation!
As you work, I will give you hints and techniques for other knotting projects, such as endless knotting (without a clasp) and the use of different kinds of beads together. I can show you how to use a calotte, French wire, and/or a soldered ring to attach your clasp. If you have a puzzling pearl clasp, bring it along so I can show you how it works.
Keep in mind that not all projects are suitable for knotting; the holes of the beads need to be the same size as each other. You may bring to the lesson your projects for repair, and get advice for the proper silk, clasps and findings (metal elements) with my guidance.
